THIS WEEK'S MEETING
Overland Park Rotary
October 22, 2025 at 11:30 am

This week's speakers are:
Kim Bergman, Co-Director of Protecting KS Children from Sexual Predators
and Amanda Smasal, Director of Development, KVC

Kim Bergman is the Co-Director of Protecting KS Children From Sexual Predators and a survivor of child sexual abuse.  The abuse that she endured inspired her to become a social worker and an advocate for children.  Kim received her Bachelor’s of Social Work Degree at the University of Kansas and went on to obtain her Master’s of Social Work Degree from the University of Missouri Kansas City.  Her advocacy work began in child welfare where she worked as a case manager for youth in foster care and as a child abuse investigator for the Department for Children and Families (DCF).  Kim began publicly sharing her story after joining the national lawsuit against USA Gymnastics that helped create Safe Sport and other safety requirements for children in sports.  Joining the lawsuit helped Kim to find her voice and become a voice for others.  Kim went on to become a member of the RAINN and MOCSA Speakers Bureaus Bureau and has spoken at various events locally and nationally to bring awareness about child sexual abuse.

Amanda Smasal - "I have a huge passion for the nonprofit sector and have a Master's degree in Nonprofit Leadership Studies as well. I have been with KVC for 2 years. It has been a wonderful journey learning about the life-saving services that KVC offers to children and families in need. Before coming to KVC, I spent 10 years of my career working at Wayside Waifs here in Kansas City. I love animals! Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family, friends, and being in nature."
Holiday Shopping with KidsTLC
Holiday Shopping with KidsTLC
Walmart at 15700 Metcalf
December 1, 2025
4:30-8:30 pm
We are again partnering with Walmart (157 & Metcalf) to sponsor a Holiday Shopping night with KidsTLC on Monday, December 1st from 4:30 to 8:30 pm.  As in the past, members and spouses of our club (along with members of the TLC Staff) will assist the Kids from TLC in shopping and wrapping gifts for others in their families.  Each will have a budget/limit of about $75, depending on how many come to shop (expecting 70 plus).

More details will be provided at upcoming meetings and through this Newsletter.  In the meantime, please follow this link to sign up for as many of the four 1-hour shifts that night as you can…or stay for the entire evening as so many have in the past.

After shopping, we will help them wrap their gifts in the break room.

The plan is for the kids to come in four groups at 4:30; 5:30; 6:30 and 7:30 pm to make things more manageable for TLC and, hopefully, give the Kids a better shopping experience (each group to have about 15-20 kids).  Please consider signing up for at least two of the four shifts starting at 4:30; 5:30; 6:30 and 7:30 pm.
