Every Rotarian Every Year
Recently, our Club’s Board of Directors has re-affirmed its commitment to supporting the philanthropy goals of District 5710 and Rotary International.

We are aiming for a 100% Every Rotarian Every Year (EREY) participation rate ($100 per Rotarian).  This will help our Club sustain our status as a Star Club within our District.  Being a Star Club elevates our stature within the District, and means we can enjoy additional Foundation contributions that enhance our District Grant project funds.

Why are these giving goals important?  They confirm that you are in solidarity with the reasons we joined Rotary in the first place.  We seek to promote a more livable planet, and a more just society.  Your donations will focus on disease prevention, clean water, protecting the environment, maternal health, literacy…

Think of where our Club’s District Grant money has recently been directed:
  • Repurposed medical equipment shipped to Panama.
  • Hearing aids to Ecuador.
  • Arithmetic workbooks for disadvantaged primary school children in Capetown, South Africa.
  • Back to school shoes for refugee children here in KCK.
Thank you for your participation now through an EREY gift of $100 or more in your April billing.
POLIO IS BACK. OUR WORK CONTINUES.

We were so close to eradicating polio, but the pandemic lifted our focus. And now new cases are emerging in Malawi, The last wild polio case in the southeastern African country was 30 years ago, and polio was declared eradicated in all of Africa in 2020.

It came back. Not on a wide scale. Not in a way that will set the world afire. Yet in a way that should make us understand the importance of the work of Rotary International, and of the PolioPlus program. Diseases that we scarcely think about and no longer fear, like polio or measles, can and do re-emerge.

Soon after the detection of polio last month in a 3-year-old girl, who is now paralyzed, UNICEF started a huge, four-nation vaccination campaign to reach 20 million children in Malawi and its neighbors. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is involved with the stepped-up surveillance in the region.

The rule of thumb is that if Malawi has diagnosed one child with paralysis, another 200 have been infected, somewhere, with less severe or asymptomatic polio cases. Surveillance shows the polio virus is not widespread and can be eradicated in the region again, but has probably been circulating since 2019.

DEAN DYER, MEMBER FOR 34 YEARS, HAS DIED
Dean passed away last weekend at age 88. Many of us remember Dean volunteering for years to serve as the club’s “historian”, documenting our meetings, speakers and events with photos, articles and scrapbooks in the pre digital era.

A service will be held this Saturday, April 9 at 1 PM, Country Club Christian Church, 6101 Ward Parkway. In lieu of flowers, the obituary in the Kansas City Star on Wednesday mentioned the church, CCCCK.org for details, or Friends of the Farmstead.  Since Deanna Rose Farmstead is near to our hearts, the club will submit a donation in Dean’s memory.

His lovely wife Sue would surely appreciate our expressions of support:

FAMILY OF ROTARY

  WAYNE BYRD GETS WINGS CLIPPED

We are happy to get an update on Wayne’s condition, even though the news is a bit dispiriting. Wayne’s cancer reoccurred in the past few months, complicated by congestive heart failure. This is sobering news, Wayne, and we are sending warm fuzzies and heartfelt prayers out to you.
The good news is that A. His voice was strong and warm as ever B. He presciently married a nurse administrator who is marshaling the healthcare system to his advantage.

Doesn’t a greeting card or personal note just feel terrific? We think so!
