Greater Kansas City Day
For those not familiar, Greater Kansas City Day is a collaboration among the Kansas City Star, the Kansas City Royals and area Rotary Clubs.  It was started by a couple of members from the Downtown Kansas City Club and has expanded to include about 35 metro area Rotary Clubs and a few other organizations.  The 29th Annual Greater Kansas City Day will take place on the morning of Friday, April 1st, prior to the Royals Home Opener against the New York Mets on Sunday, April 3rd.

Jeff Goodman will be leading the charge again this year. There are a few ways you can get involved. Where we need the greatest help is with volunteers to set up across the metro to sell copies of the Kansas City Star from 6:00-9:00 A.M. Additionally you can make sales to companies to receive the Kansas City Star on opening day in bundles of 25 papers.

For your participation, volunteers will be invited to see the Royals take on the Detroit Tigers on Thursday, April 21st.

Stay tuned for more information........
Fireside Reminder
We are still looking for a few good men/women to participate in Firesides. Firesides are a great opportunity to share your thoughts as the club grows.

Topics include service projects, member engagement, and mostly the future of our membership. Should we be bigger? smaller? Should we recruit specific targets? Should we create a satellite club? (This is a smaller subset of the club who meets at a different time with a different fee structure.) What do we need to do to remain relevant and continue to have a positive impact on our community?

I believe we are at a crossroads and we need to decide which road we are going to take. If you care about your club, your input is important.

We have several firesides scheduled. You can sign up online via Sign Up Genius. Link here: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0b4baca72babf94-firesides

Or you can contact Kelsey Lang directly: kelsey.lang@student.ottawa.edu

FAMILY OF ROTARY
Update from Carol Watts regarding Joanna's son Calvin who is in the hospital due to a blood clot. (as of 3/2)

Calvin's MRI this afternoon revealed largely what we were hoping for: the clot had not become larger, no brain damage in the way of seizures or strokes had occurred, and they will continue to leave him on the Heparin blood thinners.  They installed a port today to make addition of meds and fluids a bit easier and drawing of blood as well I guess.
The clot is large. It is at the base of the skull where the veins lead out of the brain on the way down to the heart.  Apparently if you were to vote, you would prefer a veinous clot over an arterial one?  So yay.

He will stay in ICU for 2-3 more days because they want to monitor him constantly due to the size of the clot.  Hopefully we move to outpatient shots of Heparin twice a day (yes, Jo can learn to do this...) for maybe up to 6 months by which time the clots should have dissolved.

HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?  Apparently a toddler can develop this if they become extremely dehydrated -- i.e., get sick, stop eating and drinking, and then start to vomit.  PUSH THOSE POPSICLES, MOM AND DAD.  It helps to weigh more than 30 pounds.

What can you do?  Frankly, leave 'em alone because parents are not resting and getting really worn thin. But you can send a little card via the Childrens Mercy website.
http://www.childrensmercy.org/
Then click on Patients and Families
To the right you will see SEND A CARD
Name is Calvin Patrick Bramlett, he is 3 years old and is in PICU for a room number.

We have Lucas for now, someone else has the dog, another family member is medically astute and running interference with the physicians and translating all of it, so I think we have the bases covered for now.

We appreciate you all so much.  Thank you for caring.
