Rotary Reads and Rotary Cares
It’s time for the big year-end push!!
Rotary Reads and Rotary Cares needs you to save these dates

Here’s where we’ve been:
We received two semi loads of Clorox Wipes free of charge (74 pallets each containing  225 cases). Since that time, we have distributed 50 or more of these pallets to nonprofits and many of the local school districts.
And, Christmas is coming!!!! We continue to accumulate books, household products, clothes, toys, etc. for the Johnson County Christmas Bureau as well as other nonprofits. We will make our annual donation of at least 50 pallets of products to the Christmas Bureau as well as being generous to other.

But here’s where we’re going!
Monday, Nov. 7, the Overland Park Rotary will provide 22,000 books to the five high schools in the Kansas City, Kansas School District and  Center High School. This will require volunteers for:
Saturday OCT 29 1-4 PM, at the  Kansas City Star Building, 1600 McGee St., Kansas City, Mo. for event preparation.
Monday NOV 7,  8 to noon , same location, to co-ordinate loading and delivery of books. This will require at least 5-7 pick-up trucks too.

AND OUR BIG, MULTI-SPONSOR VETERAN’S EVENT:
Wednesday NOV 9, 7 AM - 6 PM at Arrowhead Stadium on, we provide assistance to veterans and their families for to help them celebrate Veterans’ Day. This big event will be held in the parking lot adjacent to Arrowhead Stadium. Volunteers are needed to assist with product distribution to families as they drive through. SIGN-UP SHEETS WILL BE FORTHCOMING BUT SAVE PART OF YOUR DAY!  All Rotarians, friends and family urgently needed and welcome to participate.

Jo Co Christmas Bureau Gala
Let’s LIGHT UP THE NIGHT in support of low-income neighbors.  It will be a fun and exciting evening filled with light and hope.  Enjoy delicious food, wine pull, socialization, auction, music and more, all while supporting children and families in need.

(PLUS… as members of Overland Park Rotary you are eligible to ½ off tickets.). Let’s beat our previous record of 16 OP Rotarians attendees.   Did I mention that Rotarians from other clubs are also planning to attend?  Did someone say competition for attendance?

Olathe Community Prayer Breakfast

Christy Forquer is Chairman of the committee planning the Olathe Community Prayer Breakfast on Veterans’ Day, November 11. It will be held in the Cook Center on the campus of MidAmerica Nazarene University. The breakfast will begin at 7am with a program ending by 9am.

Christy says, “This year we as a committee are trying to step it up just a notch—we have contracted a nationally recognized speaker, and one I am thrilled to have with us on Veterans Day as a decorated veteran. Her name is Tammie Jo Shults. She was one of the Navy’s first F/A-18 Hornet pilots. After a very successful military career, she became a commercial pilot for Southwest Airlines. It was Captain Shults who landed the Southwest Flight 1380 back in April of 2018 after a catastrophic explosion occurred losing one engine and one person’s life, while she heroically landed the plane, saving the remaining 148 passengers. She’s an incredible lady—so engaging—and what a story she has to tell!  It’s also special to know that she is a MNU graduate, and has partnered with Garmin on a number of occasions, testing of their aeronautical products. She appreciates Olathe and loves coming back when she can.

World Polio Day
October 24

At the end of the 1980s, more than 350,000 children were paralyzed by polio every
year. Today, Rotary and its partners have reduced the incidence of polio by 99.9%. However, until we see the last of the poliovirus, eradication efforts need additional funding to:

IMMUNIZE more than 400 million children against polio every year

IMPROVE disease surveillance systems to detect any poliovirus in a person or the environment

HIRE more than 150,000 health workers to go door to door to find every child
